Al Lentz
Co-owner
Al Lentz, is thankful for the journey with Lentzcaping Inc. He is the third generation in his family to make landscaping his lifelong profession. Al’s Grandfather, Giuseppe Serogo came over from Italy in 1910, when he was just 12 years old. With a pair of hand clippers and a mechanical mower, Giuseppe started Serogo Landscaping. Older locals around the area remember his grandfather and his landscaping business.
Al’s Uncle Tony, better known as Tony the Tiger, took over the family business for his father. He was pulled out of the 8th grade to work for Serogo Landscaping, and eventually employed his own twin sons, Ray and Richie to work alongside him through his years running the family business. Always youthful and a hard worker, Tony ran the business until he was 81 years old.
Al started working for his uncle at the age of 15 as a freshman at Archbishop Wood High School in 1977. He was attending summer school that year, and began work running the “Bed Crew” at 11am every day, so he could fit it in with his schooling. One of the friends Al brought on board was his now business partner and fellow school friend, Steve Happ. He and Steve did the bed work and trimmed bushes from 11-7 every day and enjoyed the money they made. It didn’t matter how many hours they worked, at the end of the week, they were given a $100 dollar bill! It was always a fun job and Al enjoyed working alongside many of his friends over the years. In Al’s family, if they weren’t yelling at you, they didn’t like you! This tough love formed the strong will Al has to help run a successful business today.
Though Al loved working for the family business, he left it to pursue higher education in 1982. Al attended Kutztown University and majored in Business Management. After college, he took over the family business and founded Lentzcaping in 1987, with his good friend and business partner Steve Happ.
To Al, the biggest thing about Lentzcaping is the journey. He enjoys the physical work and the process of growing a business. Al loves the challenge of working outside of his comfort zone and learning from it. Through Lentzcaping and his work beautifying homes and businesses, Al has met so many great people and his career has taken him many places he may have never seen.
Lentzcaping currently provides jobs for 30 people. The business saves 50,000 gallons of water every year by collecting storing and reusing rainwater to irrigate the property and wash the trucks and vehicles. Al’s belief in helping people and the environment has taken him to Columbia, South America, and Ghana, Africa. There, with Aquascapes, Inc., Al and the Lentzcaping team installed rainwater harvesting systems much like the one he uses on his own property. These ecofriendly systems help the local people collect and maintain clean water, and significantly improve their living conditions. He is going to Uganda in January 2012 to do the same thing. What fuels Al is helping and getting to know all the good people with each job. Al gets satisfaction out of his customers’ appreciation for Lentzcaping’s work and that goes a long way for him. The journey and the people he meets are what make it all worth it for Al Lentz. |

Steve Happ
Co-Owner
Starting in high school, Steve Happ worked many summer’s with Al’s uncle’s business, Serago Landscaping. Al and Steve often talked about doing it on their own someday. Steve remembers one Friday, Al called him and told him he was starting his own business that Monday. Steve quit his job the next day and with $5000, he came home and started the business with his friend and new partner, Al Lentz.
Steve graduated from Archbishop Wood High School in 1981. After graduating he left to attend the University of Scranton and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Management in 1985. The knowledge he learned at university as well as the business relations he made over the years have been the winning combination for sustaining a successful company.
Steve also credits his mother for paving the road to the company’s success. Mrs. Happ was Lentzcaping’s first secretary, treasurer and office manager. She worked out of her laundry room, helping Steve and Al launch the business. He fondly remembers picking up the payroll on Friday mornings from his parent’s milk box! Steve believes none of this would have been possible without his mother’s hard work and guidance.
Steve’s favorite part about leading Lentzcaping Inc. is that no two days are ever the same. He loves customer contact and relations, and he loves the challenge of taking a problem and finding a common ground solution for all involved parties. His favorite memory is buying the property at 2139 Bristol Road in 1995. The purchase of the property gave Lentzcaping a home. Thanks to Steve’s initiative and progressive foresight, this home has become a state of the art facility, with an incredible outdoor design center. Instead of a seasonal landscape schedule, Lentzcaping is open all year long thanks to its thriving Utility Department, directed by Steve Happ. |
